Anything more than nothing

There is a lot floating around social media at the moment about what to do with our time social distancing - learning new skills, home improvements, adding to our qualifications. Some of it can be encouraging and some can leave the reader feeling that they are failing by not becoming super-human in these strange and difficult times. So here is my perspective.

We have been forced (out of necessity) to drastically change our way of life in a moment, a moment between one news bulletin and the next. We have lost the luxury of being able to plan, of feeling like we have some sense of what each of our futures holds. It is easy to underestimate the impact this can have on each of us, and it will likely impact each of us in a different way.

So here's the thing, there is no one right way to do this. There is no magic formula to getting through, or even thriving at this time. What works for each of us will be different and what each of us has the capacity to achieve will vary - from person to person, from day to day, from hour to hour. And that's OK. It is OK to be forgiving towards yourself when you don't get the three page 'to do' list complete, or feel motivated to redecorate the house, landscape the garden and invent a new tech that will revolutionise the world. It's OK to get up a little later and have that extra cuppa in the morning.

The important thing is to do something. If you are feeling low and struggling to get started, do something small. And then do something else small and keep focussing on the next small thing you can achieve. Anything more than nothing is something.
